Drive against auto-rickshaws

NEW DELHI: Over 900 auto-rickshaw drivers have been prosecuted and 48 auto-rickshaws impounded by the Delhi traffic police in the past two days for alleged overcharging, misbehaviour and not plying by the meter.

According to the police, 501 drivers were prosecuted for overcharging, whereas 411 were booked for refusal to ferry passengers or misbehaving with them. Six more were prosecuted for permit violations and 14 for driving without licence. Six vehicles were found running with defective meters.

"Those having any grievances regarding auto-rickshaws can either call up the help line (23378888) or send an SMS to 6767," said a senior police officer.

Special court at Tihar

NEW DELHI: For speedy disposal of cases of petty offenders, a special court presided over by Metropolitan Magistrate A.S. Aggarwal was held over the weekend at Tihar Court Complex here.

The court took up the cases of 47 confessing prisoners, of which 38 were disposed of and the rest were referred to the regular courts. This was the 74th court of its kind.

Bicycle rally

NEW DELHI: The eight-day bicycle rally organised by Delhi Shramik Sangathan ended on Monday at Gandhi Peace Foundation here, where a number of people from different organisations and slums were present to welcome the participants.

The rally was organised to demand the right to housing and dignity for working class people who live in slums and have faced displacement.

A two-day convention started here on Monday on "Right to Housing and Life with Human Dignity" which was addressed by Amarjeet Kaur of the All-India Trade Union Congress, senior advocate Prashant Bhushan and DSS's Ramendra.

NGO's annual function

NEW DELHI: Tarun Mitra Parishad will present wheelchairs and artificial limbs to physically challenged persons, sewing machines to needy women and study material and scholarships to economically backward students at its 31st annual function at Pearey Lal Bhawan here this coming Sunday. While Delhi Finance Minister Ashok Kumar Walia will honour eminent social workers, Tarun Mitra Parishad's patron Inder Chand Jain Badjatya will preside over the function.

Music concert

NEW DELHI: To coincide with the beginning of Dhanur month, Vasundhara Enclave Sarveswara Samaj organised a Carnatic music concert by Vasantha Sundaram and her students of Mayur Vihar Phase-I at Sri Sankatahara Ganapathy Temple in Vasundhara Enclave over the weekend.
