KOTTAYAM: Autorickshow drivers under the banner of a joint action council held a strike in the town against what they termed harassment by the Motor Vehicle Department. The issue relates to the efforts of the authorities for compulsory installation of fare meters in autorickshaws registered in the municipal area. The authorities found that the unprecedented rise in the number of autorickshaws operating in the town made auto-taxies unviable and introduced a system where by those registered within the municipal area should have a different colour scheme and separate numbering. Out of the nearly 1,500 autorickshaws registered in the municipal area, only half have adhered to the new stipulation.
