Santhi's father to seek Karunanidhi's help to get back medal

Staff Reporter

PUDUKOTTAI: Sportsperson Santhi's father M. Soundarajan has said on Monday that he will seek the assistance of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in getting back the silver medal she won in the Doha Asian games.

Talking to presspersons at his residence at Kathakurichi in Pudukottai district, he said he felt very sad about his daughter being stripped of the medal. The Chief Minister had informed him that the stripping of the medal was the outcome of a "jealous section".

Mr. Soundarajan pointed out that his daughter had won several medals in her earlier events in three countries. The gender issue did not crop up then.

On the State Government's gesture of sanctioning Rs. 15 lakh, he said the cash award had relieved him of the trouble of meeting the expenses for well-being of his children. All these years he had to toil to bring them up and he would now utilise the amount for their education.

He expressed his thanks to a number of well-wishers from across the State, who had been sending greetings, appreciating Santhi's talents and achievements. Ever since Santhi won the medal, he had been receiving several letters from the people. Santhi's mother said she too was sad about the decision on the medal. The parents were given a traditional reception by the relatives and local people.
