CHENNAI: The Pattali Makkal Katchi on Monday staged demonstrations in different parts of the State to highlight the need for implementation of all provisions of the Official Languages Act, 1956. PMK founder S. Ramadoss led the stir in front of the Villupuram Collectorate. In Chennai, party president G.K. Mani, along with Member of Parliament A.K. Moorthy and Member of the Legislative Assembly T. Velmurugan, held a demonstration near Valluvar Kottam. Those who took part in the demonstrations in other areas were former Union Minister N.T. Shanmugam at Vellore; Peranamallur MLA G. Idiroli Manian at Tiruvannamalai; MLA Sakthi Kamalambal at Kanhceepuram; MLA K. Arumugam at Chenglpattu and Omalur MLA A. Tamizharasu at Salem. Mr. Mani said it was during the Congress regime in 1956 that the Act was created. The then Finance Minister C. Subramaniam, who piloted the legislation in the Assembly, declared that he had attained salvation. "But, the Act is yet to attain its salvation," Mr Mani said. Most of the official communication was not in Tamil.
