CHENNAI
: Tiruvottiyur police arrested seven persons, including a Corporation councillor, on Monday on charges of unlawful assembly in front of a shop, stone throwing and using abusive language.
The seven were later remanded. According to the police, 47th ward councillor Bala Yogeswaran, Congress functionaries Sukumaran, Senthil Kumar, Sivakumar, Nagarajan, Divakar, and Santhosh pelted stones at a shop owned by another senior Congress party worker G. Varadarajan. They verbally abused Mr. Varadarajan, apparently provoked by his participation in a function organised by a Hindu religious group on Sunday. Tiruvottiyur police are searching for four more party workers.
Cash stolen
A three-member gang attacked a two-wheeler rider and decamped with Rs. 26,000 on Monday. Suryanarayanan of Valsaravakkam was heading towards KK Nagar on the 200 feet road when the gang followed in an auto. They manoeuvred their auto to hit Suryanarayanan's two-wheeler. The vehicle skidded and the gang fled after snatching cash from the rider.
