CHENNAI
: The new drive against illegal advertisement hoardings in the city is gaining momentum. By Monday evening, a press release issued by Chennai Collectorate said its officials had removed nine illegal hoardings. They also planned to remove at least 27 more in overnight operations.
Chennai Collector R. Jaya has said the drive against illegal hoardings would continue in the days to come.
A committee set up by the state government recently has met twice to discuss how to carry out the drive against illegal hoardings in the city. The Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, had recently issued a strong statement that illegal advertisement hoardings would not be tolerated.
Resistance
Meanwhile, sources said government officials who had tried to remove an illegal advertisement hoarding in Mylapore taluk on Sunday met with resistance from a local strongman.
After being abused and threatened, officials reportedly had to temporarily postpone their drive.
