Moksha frontman Leon Ireland dead

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Frontman of popular Chennai-based rock band Moksha, Leon Ireland, died on Monday at 3.30 a.m. of an asthma attack. He was 34.

Leon had been suffering from asthma for several years.

Moksha guitarist Alan Roy, one of the founder members of the 11-year-old band along with Leon, said, "This morning, I got an SMS saying that Moksha has lost its voice."

Christy Samuel, lead guitarist of the band, said Leon's open-mindedness to ideas was the reason the band survived so long.

They had just finished working on their first album of original tracks. "We are all in shock and don't know how to react. We'll have to decide the future of the band," he said.

Band manager and close friend Sean Bout said they would release the album soon.

The vocalist was called the `Bruce Dickinson of India' (Iron Maiden) and was known to do accurate covers of Iron Maiden.

Leon was born in Kharagpur and came to Chennai to study at Loyola College.

He worked as a copywriter at Rediffusion. He is survived by wife Rosalyn, his mother and four siblings.

The funeral is scheduled for 3.30 on Tuesday at the Ubagara Koil, next to St Thomas Hospital.
