CHENNAI: Melodious notes from the movie Titanic filled the air as women clad in red set a perfect ambience for the start of the Mrs. Chennai 2006 finals at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, on Sunday evening. The pretty, confident contestants walked down the ramp in their fiery red and gold evening gowns. The 13 contestants came to stage one by one along with their husbands and answered questions posed by judges. The participants, selected from hundreds of applications, included three doctors, one pilot, IT professionals and homemakers. In the talent hunt round, they showcased their potential by group performances andperformed contemporary dance numbers, medley songs. Based on their performances in the sub events, personality and talent rounds, five participants were selected for the finals. Lakshmi Venkatesh, who said no one could stop a woman from reaching great heights if she had self-belief and a positive attitude, won the JM Realtors Mrs. Chennai title. Wife of squadron leader Venkatesh, Lakshmi is a school teacher at Avadi. Deepa Jayakumar, a corporate communicator, and Indira Mitra, a pilot with a private airline company, were the first and second-runners up.
