Polish film festival kicks off in city

Staff Reporter

Featuring five movies, it is part of the `Days of Poland In India'

  • It is titled `Cinema with a Wink: Criminal Fiction'
  • Films will throw light on Polish culture, expertise of directors

CHENNAI: A Polish film festival was inaugurated in the city on Monday by Janusz Byliniski, Consul General of Poland in Mumbai.

Mr. Byliniski said the festival, featuring five movies, was part of the `Days of Poland In India' celebrations. "We have organised various events in some of the main cities in India."

Titled `Cinema with a Wink: Criminal Fiction', it allows audiences to understand the culture of Poland and the expertise of Polish directors. Polish films were a contrast with Hollywood films as they dealt with critical issues of the fast changing world and the problems facing the modern man.

Recalling how Poland was one of the most "targeted countries" during World War II, Mr. Bylinski said one could see some main issues concerning the War on screen. "Five films in this package will offer crime comedies, theft, conmen, great gambles, gang robbery and corruption. You should not expect fast action with stunts. But one can see interesting visuals with intelligent screenplay."

    Intriguing plots

Polish cinema could never afford high capital productions but the directors made up for it with intriguing and well-conceived plots, good acting and intelligent and engaging dialogues.

    "Enjoy and smile"

"These comedies will not make you burst with laughter but will certainly make you smile. I hope you enjoy these movies and smile," he added.

The festival is organised by the Sangeet Natak Akademi; Ministry of Culture, Government of India; Ministry of Culture and National heritage, Poland; Embassy of the Republic of Poland In India; Federation of Film Societies of India; Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation and Adam Mickiewics Institute.
