KOCHI: Sachin Pilot, MP, son of the former Union Minister Rajesh Pilot, was given the P.M. Sayeed Memorial Award for promising young parliamentarians here on Monday. Speaking on the occasion, Vayalar Ravi, Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, remembered Sayeed as a parliamentarian who gave the pride of place for secularism. "He ardently followed Gandhiji's idea of an inclusive society. It is heartening to note that secularism has outlived the trials of the times," Mr. Ravi said, adding that Sayeed played a crucial role in the development of Lakshwadweep, his constituency. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy spoke of the interest Sayeed, as Union Minister for Power, showed in rural electrification. Mr. Pilot said in his reply that he was honoured and humbled by the award. "An MP's job is both challenging and fulfilling. We are able to highlight the woes of millions of people. Parliament is a mini-India, a dynamic and powerful place." Sayeed Memoir, a reference book on the life and times of the leader, was released on the occasion. K.V. Thomas, MLA; Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala; and P.K. Shamsudeen, former High Court judge, spoke.
