DECADES-OLD DREAM: The new Edayar bridge at Thiruvallom in the city. Photo: S. Gopakumar
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 350 families on the Edayar island, near Thiruvallam in the City Corporation limits, have reason to be happy. Their long wait for a new bridge connecting the island to the mainland is finally over. The narrow rickety bridge that served the purpose has been replaced with a new steel structure that can accommodate vehicular traffic. Work on the new steel bridge started during the fag end of the previous Corporation Council. The project was later included in the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the formation of Kerala State. Built on a concrete pile foundation, the three-span bridge linking Pachalloor and Puthenpally is 3.6 metres wide and spans a length of 30 metres. It has 30- metre approach roads at both ends. Constructed at a cost of Rs.68 lakh, the bridge can accommodate vehicles, including mini lorries with laden weight of up to eight tonnes. The project was executed by the public sector Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company Limited. Minister for Local Self Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty is scheduled to inaugurate the new bridge at a function to be held at the Edayar junction on Tuesday evening. Mayor C. Jayan Babu will preside over the function.
