`Further action on Court's directive'

Staff Reporter

Justice has prevailed, says Delhi Police Commissioner K.K. Paul

NEW DELHI: With three of the accused in the sensational Jessica Lal murder case convicted by the Delhi High Court on Monday, Delhi's Police Commissioner K.K. Paul said the special investigation team (SIT) which was set up to probe alleged destruction of evidence, fabrication and criminal conspiracy in the case to save the accused would take any further action on the Court's direction.

Jubilant over the conviction order, Dr. Paul said justice had prevailed and those guilty of having committed the crime were being punished as per law. When asked about the status of the SIT, he said it was constituted after the High Court took suo motu cognisance. "The SIT has submitted the status report to the Court and so any further action in the matter would depend on the direction of the court," he added.

In March this year, the police had registered a separate First Information Report against "unknown" people for alleged acts of omission and commission that led to acquittal of the nine accused in the lower court this February.

Dr. Paul had then said that the police had carefully studied the lower court judgement in consultation with legal experts including the Additional Solicitor General of India and found that some of the evidence of the commission of offence had been tampered to save the accused. The FIR mentioned that efforts to save the accused by some officials, by illegal means, had been made on several occasions, clearly indicating it was a result of criminal conspiracy.

"The criminal conspiracy was aimed at obstructing and deflecting the course of justice," read the FIR.

Meanwhile, Jessica's sister Sabrina Lal welcomed the verdict, "There is a feeling of victory and vindication."
