Many big showrooms sealed

Staff Reporter

Daylong drive in South Delhi areas remains inconclusive

NEW DELHI: Accompanied by the members of the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee, sealing squads of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Monday targeted big shopping complexes, showrooms and offices in the Mehrauli, Lado Sarai and Andheria Mor areas of South Delhi. At least 68 illegal commercial premises faced the sealing action during the daylong drive that remained inconclusive.

The sealed shopping arcades included the Ambavatta Complex in Mehrauli that houses stores of some of India's top fashion gurus including Ritu Beri and Tarun Tahiliani besides some international brands.

More than a dozen fashion boutiques and stores were also sealed in the multi-storey complex that had come up illegally on "Lal Dora" land where commercial activities are not allowed.

The MCD squad followed the two Monitoring Committee members -- K.J. Rao and S.P. Jhingan -- who directed them to seal illegal commercial establishments.

Though most of the stores at Ambavatta Complex had shifted their articles and other stuffs, the squad still sealed the stores and offices housed inside it.

The squad also sealed one of the prominent farmhouses being used for marriages and receptions -- Mittal Garden. Similarly, Maharaja Carpets, the famous furnishing showrooms Home Store and the office of a Mumbai-based telecom company Cogent Heritage were also sealed amid strong police presence.

However, the MCD squad gave a breather to Qutab Colonade being used for commercial purposes and Bharti Airtel's main administrative office at Mehrauli, asking them to furnish more details about their legal status.

The MCD also needed to check their status with the DDA and ASI , said an official.
