`Release Sharmila'

NEW DELHI: The brother of Irom Chanu Sharmila, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past six years demanding repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, has moved the Delhi High Court seeking her release from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences here.

Singhajit on Monday said although the doctors at AIIMS had discharged Ms. Sharmila on December 14, the police were not allowing her to leave. "When we asked them to let her go, they said they could not do so until there were orders from their higher ups," said Mr. Singhajit.

He then moved a petition in the High Court seeking its intervention in the matter. "The Court will hear the matter on Wednesday," he said.

Extortion bid

NEW DELHI: Two young men have been arrested by the Shahdara police under the Indian Penal Code and I.T. Act for allegedly taking some objectionable photographs of a Delhi University graduate and threatening to circulate them through mobile messaging service if they were not paid a sum of Rs 50,000.

The police said the 21-year-old victim was a resident of Shahdara. A few days ago she was introduced to one Prabhat Jain by her neighbour, Tarun Jain. Subsequently the girl and Prabhat became friends. The police said some days ago the accused took her to Vivek Vihar in his car and offered the girl a soft drink apparently laced with some drug because of which she fell unconscious. The accused later approached her with a demand for Rs. 50,000. The girl lodged a complaint with the Shahdara police, which arrested both the accused.

Held for evading tax

NEW DELHI: Two elderly brothers have been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Crime Branch on charges of evading sales tax through fraudulent means causing a loss of Rs. 4.30 crores to the Exchequer.

The police received a complaint from the Department of Trade & Tax alleging that Jagdish Prasad (72) and his brother Shyam Sunder (60) -- who ran a company named Jagdish Oil Traders -- had fraudulently claimed sales tax rebate while filing four quarterly returns for the year 2002-03. Investigations revealed that the accused had produced forged bank challans to evade sales tax of Rs. 4.30 crores.
