SALEM: The `Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam' (All Villages Anna Renaissance Scheme) is aimed at developing the infrastructure in village panchayats and enhancing the socio-economic status of the people in rural areas, Collector N. Mathivanan has said. He was addressing a sensitisation programme for village panchayat presidents and officials organised here on Tuesday. He said that works to develop basic infrastructure facilities would be carried out in the panchayats, after identifying the requirements. The scheme would facilitate the panchayats to undertake works, including construction of concrete paths, installation of sodium vapour lamps, creation of playground, laying of pipelines for drinking water supply, removing silt from the temple ponds and `ooranis', developing inland fishery, building reading rooms, creation of basic amenities on crematorium grounds and renovation of village markets, he said. These development works would ensure all-round development in the panchayats and improve the socio-economic condition of the people. The panchayats that had the lowest per capita income were identified and these villages would be covered first under the scheme. Each village panchayat would be allotted a sum of Rs. 20 lakh under the scheme, he said. The Collector appealed to the elected representatives and officials to extend their full cooperation for the effective implementation of the scheme. The scheme would be extended to all the village panchayats in a phased manner, he said. Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency D. Jaganathan, who presided, detailed the nuances of the scheme. Village panchayat presidents, vice-presidents, block development officers, engineers and officials participated in the programme.
