Left leaders want Act repealed
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
Left leaders on Tuesday urged the Government to repeal the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in the light of repeated demands from the northeast people.
Leading a delegation of all-party leaders from Manipur, the Left leaders told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that even the Justice B.P. Jeevan Reddy Committee had suggested that the Act be scrapped.
A consensus had emerged on the issue and the Centre should act without any delay, Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja said. The Prime Minister told the delegation that the issue should be looked into in the overall national interest, he added. The team included Basudeb Acharia (CPI-M), Gurudas Dasgupta and S. Sudhakar Reddy (CPI).
