dated December 20, 1956: Japan admitted to UN

Japan was admitted to the United Nations on December 18 by the General Assembly's vote. Voting was unanimous. Fifty-one countries, including Britain, France, the US, the Soviet Union and India joined in sponsoring a resolution on Japan's admission. A great burst of applause went up as the Assembly President announced the result. Mr. Shigemitsu and the other members of the Japanese delegation bowed in acknowledgment.
