Scathing criticism

Seminars are not new to Kannur University. But one of them, held the other day on the Mangattuparamba campus, drew much attention, as the topic was "Role of universities in social progress."

Though T.N. Jayachandran, former Calicut University Vice-Chancellor, sounded sceptical in his speech, he exuded the hope that vice-chancellors could be bold and true to their position as heads of the autonomous institutions. M.G.S. Narayanan, historian, said the universities were seldom autonomous and the vice-chancellors were controlled by the government.
