Kozhikode remembers Noushad again

Noushad Ali seems to be the flavour of the season as far as music in Kozhikode is concerned. On Sunday at the Town Hall, Sangeet Milan paid homage to the gifted music composer, who died last May; it was the second such show in a week.

The programme got off on the right note with Leena Pappan, Haseena and Manju coming together to sing the Lata Mangeshkar number from the film `Uran Khatola' - "Mera salaam le jaa... ."

Leena, veteran of many a stage show, was indeed one of the most impressive singers of the evening. Her rendition of "Bekas pe karam kijiye sarkaar-e-madina... " from Naushad's masterpiece `Mughal-e-Azam' was one of the finest efforts of the show.

Also impressive was another veteran, A.K. Sukumaran, who sang "Tu ganga ki mauj... " (`Baiju Bawara'). Another song from the same film "More bhool gaye sawariya... " was also rendered well by Manju.

Haseena's "Akhiya mila ke jiya bharma ke... ", a lovely song originally sung by Zohrabai Ambalawali for the 1944 film `Rattan', and Jinu Karthikeyan's "Uthaye ja unke sitam... " (`Andaz') were also enjoyable.

Nadakavu Mohammed Koya, Narayanan Namboodiri, Kabir Das, A.P.M. Koya, Raghu and Kattayat Venugopal were the other singers. The orchestra, led by Pappan, did a good job.

It was a pretty good show, though the evening could have been even more melodious had the organisers included songs like "Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam... " (`Mere Mehboob') and "Mohe panghat pe nandlal... " (`Mughal-e-Azam'), two of the finest compositions by Naushad.
