MOSCOW: The Government of Kyrgyzstan has resigned in an attempt to resolve a long-winding political crisis in the impoverished Central Asian republic. Announcing the resignation of his Cabinet on Monday Kyrgyz Prime Minister Felix Kulov said the move was aimed at "speeding up new parliamentary elections" in line with the new Constitution. He called on the legislators to follow the Government's example and step down. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev accepted the resignation of the Government and asked it to stay on till a new Cabinet is formed. The Constitution was approved last month after a week-long demonstrations against the President organised by Opposition legislators. It decreased the President's powers and gave Parliament the right to appoint the Government. The Constitution also provides for Parliament to be elected on party lists, whereas the current legislature was chosen from non-party list .
