Plantation wage accord

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: Amid charges of "sell-out" by a section of the trade unions, two main plantation workers' unions in Sri Lanka on Tuesday agreed to a daily wage of Rs. 260 (Sri Lanka) per day in a bid to end the two-week-old strike. The Employers' Federation agreed to a Rs. 260 per day salary ($1 fetches 104 Sri Lankan rupees) for the workers and the new salary will be in effect retroactively from November 1 this year. The collective agreement is valid for the years 2007 and 2008. The Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC), Lanka National Plantation Workers' Union and Plantation Industry Trade Union Federation represented the workers, while the employers were represented by the chairman of the collective agreement Gothabaya Dasanayaka and Lalith Obesekara.
