Letters to the Editor
That the priests and servitors deserted the temple and declined to perform the rituals, and `upper' caste youth took out rallies protesting the entry of Dalits is unfortunate. It is ironical that when the world is turning into a global village, our village structure has not changed much. While our governments swear by the interests of the downtrodden, the basic structure remains the same. Unless caste is eliminated, all talk of development goals is meaningless.
Bijay Shankar Patel,
It is ridiculous that Dalits are denied entry into some Hindu temples even today. Such discrimination against Dalits violates their fundamental rights. One wonders why the self-styled Hindu reformists distance themselves from such issues. The caste system demands immediate redress. A country attains real independence only when oppression of all kinds stops forever.
C.P. Velayudhan Nair,
Those who criticise conversions from Hinduism should realise that such discrimination is what encourages the marginalised to convert to other religions. The RSS and rest of the sangh parivar should step in when such situations arise and prevail upon the dominant castes to give up such discriminatory practices.
