Government mulls proposal to ban plastic material

Special Correspondent

Rangasamy urges people to use drinking water judiciously "No permission for new chemical industries in the Union Territory"

Puducherry: The Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, has called upon the people to be judicious in using potable water as crisis in getting assured water supply might catch them unawares.

Releasing a document on the "Status of Environment in the Union Territory" at the concluding day of the month-long campaign to generate awareness among the people about environment, organised by the Department of Science, Technology and Environment here on Monday, Mr. Rangasamy said that the Government was studying the feasibility of banning plastic material.

It would first be studied fully before taking a decision. Indiscriminate disposal of plastic cups and plastic material into the drains had contributed to choking of the flow of sewerage during the recent rains.

Hence, a close look would be taken into the matter for an effective strategy.

He said that the Government was now supplying around 140 litres of drinking water a day per head on an average.

But with the possibility of sub-soil water declining in the future, there should be proper awareness about the need to conserve it.

The Government did not grant permission for new chemical industries in Puducherry, as already it had burnt its fingers.

The discharge of untreated effluents from chemical factories in some places had resulted in damage to the water table and threat to the environment.

R. Viswanathan MLA, the Secretary to the Department of Science, Technology and Environment A. Anbarasu and Director of the department M. Arunachalam also spoke.
