DMK playing double game on Karaikal issue: AIADMK

Special Correspondent

Party only `paying lip service to the cause'

  • "How can party supporting Government be given opposition status?"
  • Assistants to the legislators remain unpaid: Anbalagan

Puducherry: The Seretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) here A. Anbalagan, MLA, alleged that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was playing a double game by pretending to champion the cause of Karaikal.

Addressing mediapersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Anbalagan said that if the DMK was really interested in ensuring the development of Karaikal, it should seek a berth in the Ministry.

It was also amusing to see that the DMK, which had seven members on its side in the Assembly (including two from Karaikal) and supporting the Congress from outside to run the Government, was enjoying the status of Opposition. How could a party supporting the Government be given opposition status, he questioned.

He said that there was also possibility for some of the DMK functionaries to get positions as chairmen or chiefs of the public sector undertakings and corporations here. This was a clear case of the DMK playing a double game, as on the one hand it enjoyed the benefits of being the Opposition and on the other hand, it was criticising the Government as ignoring development of Karaikal.

Mr. Anbalagan said that the DMK legislators of Karaikal first came out with firm stand to boycott the winter session to mark their protest against the government's failure to address the grievances of Karaikal. They did also associate the other four legislators from the district. All of a sudden the DMK members revoked their boycott plan and started making statements that were appreciative of the Government's steps and critical of those alleging that Karaikal was ignored. This chaotic and unstable approach of the DMK was a clear case of the party hoodwinking the people.

Mr. Anbalagan also wanted the Congress Government here to ensure that the group C staff in local bodies were paid salaries and allowances through the Government departments instead of by the local bodies, as was the case now. Assistants to the legislators remained unpaid for nearly four months, as they were yet to be confirmed in their services.

A discriminatory approach was adopted in their case while those in the Office of Council of Ministers had already been confirmed. Mr. Anbalagan also wanted the Government to issue orders to regularise services of 61 staff engaged as music teachers, computer instructors and in other disciplines in the Jawahar Bhal Bhavan and mini Bhal Bhavans.
