Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A doyen of American studies in India, M. S. Venkataramani, passed away here on Tuesday morning. He was 81. He is survived by his wife and four children.

Dr. Venkataramani was professor emeritus at the School of International Studies, Centre for American and West European Studies, at the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

The first Dean of the School of International Studies, Dr. Venkataramani was instrumental in laying the foundation of the school that has grown to become one of the most popular in the University. Dr. Venkataramani has been responsible for mentoring most leading luminaries in American studies.

"As students we all read his books on India, Pakistan and the United States. It was one of the first few books to deal with this complex relationship comprehensively. He was a good orator, had a great sense of humour and was a wonderful person," said Associate Professor at the School of International Studies, JNU, Alka Acharya.

His work on Quit India Movement and Franklin D. Roosevelt has been long regarded as standard reference works for students in India and America.

Dr. Venkataramani has also written several books. "He also worked for The Hindu during the critical years before Independence. He was a challenging professor and a great inspiration," said Associate Professor at the School of International Studies K. P. Vijaylakshmi.
