KOZHIKODE: A committee formed by nature lovers to protect the Poonoorpuzha has voiced concern at threats to the river from construction activities. The river is the source of drinking water for residents of ward 7 in Kozhikode Corporation and Kakkodi panchayat. It is also the source for the Vengeri-kadu drinking water project, Thoovattuparambu drinking water scheme and the Kakkodi panchayat drinking water project, all set up under the People's Plan programme. The protest being made is against the move reportedly being made to set up a petrol pump near the river and is headed by the Poonoorpuzha Protection Committee led by its chairman Shobeendran, convener Prabhakaran Karinbil and K.C. Anil Kumar, councillor. Opposing the move, the spokesmen for the committee expressed the fear that the presence of the petrol pump would lead to seepage of oil into the soil in its neighbourhood and later into the river itself. Pollution of the river would affect thousands of people.
