ROAD AHEAD: President of Japan's Honda Motor Co., Takeo Fukui, addressing a press conference at the company's headquarters in Tokyo on Tuesday when he outlined the company's global plans.
NEW DELHI: Honda Motor will launch a small car in India when it goes in for a new plant to expand capacity in the country, Honda Motor President and CEO Takeo Fukui said on Tuesday in Tokyo. A company release based on his year-end address quoted Mr. Fukui as saying that the company has set a target of producing and selling more than 1.50 lakh cars in India annually by the end of 2010. Incidentally, it is the first time that Mr. Fukui has officially acknowledged and announced that the global car major would be joining the big-volume small car segment in India. Honda, now engaged in doubling the capacity at its Greater Noida plant to one lakh units with an investment of Rs. 400 crore, is also scouting for a location for a new greenfield plant. The new plant could possibly be used for the small car planned by the company for India. Indications are that the company is contemplating investments to the tune of $200 million for the new plant.
