Folk arts festival begins at Mannady

PATHANAMTHITTA: A folk arts festival, marking the district-level valedictory function of the golden jubilee celebrations of the formation of the State, began at Mannady near Adoor on Tuesday.

District panchayat president Appinazhakathu Santhakumari inaugurated the event at the Veluthampi Dalawa Memorial at Mannady at 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday. The festival is being organised by the district panchayat, the district-level organising committee and the Kadamabanad grama panchayat.

Artistes from different parts of the district presented Theyyattom, Mudiyattom, Parichamuttukali, Kudamattom, folk dance and songs at the festival. The District Roller Skating Association presented a roller skating dance.

A colourful procession with caparisoned elephants, chendamelom, pandimelom, panchavadyom, Velakali and floats will be held in the afternoon prior to the cultural meet to be held at 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Transport Minister Mathew T. Thomas will inaugurate the meeting to be presided by Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA. Actor Indrans will be the chief guest. The celebrations will come to a close with a ganamela.
