PALAKKAD: The three-day national council meeting of the `Bharatheeya Khet Mazdoor Union' (BKMU), the agriculture workers' organisation of the Communist Party of India (CPI), began here on Tuesday. The meeting, in a resolution, expressed its `deep concern and anguish at the State and Central Government's ongoing move to acquire big tracts of land for industrial and corporate purposes under the Special Economic Zones Act.' It also sought a comprehensive Central legislation for agriculture workers. The resolution moved by general secretary Nagendra Nath Ojha, ex-MP, said the BKMU was of the view that `if private entities were allowed to own huge tracts of land (agriculture or waste land) it would amount to the re-establishment of the zamindari system.' He said the BKMU was against the West Bengal Government's steps to acquire agriculture land for a car factory of the Tatas.
