Kerala CM Achuthanandan lauds Sreesanth

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Chief Minister, V.S. Achuthanandan, has lauded the match-winning performance of Indian pace bowler S. Sreesanth in the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg.

The Chief Minister informed the appreciation of the State for Sreesanth, on being adjudged as the Man of the Match, to the cricketer's father, Santhakumaran Nair, over telephone on Tuesday, an official release stated.

Meanwhile, the Government has accorded administrative sanction for the release of Rs. 15 lakhs to the Usha School of Athletics as grant.

Canara Bank posts win

Canara Bank scored a four-wicket win over Lovers XI in the Canara Bank-TDCA `C' division cricket league at the Vellayani Agriculture College ground on Tuesday.

The scores: Lovers XI 212 in 40.3 overs (Najaf 43, Vijayakumar four for 61) lost to Canara Bank 213 for six in 41 overs (Sreenath 59 n.o.).

Sweet revenge for Thiruvananthapuram

At Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram avenged its last year's defeat at the hands of SAI (Kollam), winning 4-2 via the tie-breaker, in the final of the 52nd State senior hockey championship at the Engineering College ground, Ramavarmapuram, on Tuesday.

The two teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation time.

Earlier, Kollam took the third spot with a 4-2 victory over host Thrissur through the penalty shoot-out which was enforced after the two teams had failed to break the deadlock during full-time.

Ashik sizzles

I.Q. Ashik struck thrice as Thrissur drubbed Pathanamthitta 9-0 in the 11th Peerless Trophy State youth football championship on Tuesday. In another pre-quarterfinal match, Kannur blanked Alappuzha 4-0.

The results (pre-quarterfinals): Kannur 4 (Abid 2, Rahul, Lijin Raj) bt Alappuzha 0.

Thrissur 9 (I.Q. Ashiq 3, A.R. Renjith, Aneesh, Surjit, Shafeeq, Sajith, Yahia) bt Pathanamthitta 0.

Vinil scalps five

At Kochi, medium-pacer Vinil Wilson's five-wicket haul helped Cordiant Tripunithura CC thrash neighbour Scorpions CC by 225 runs in an Ernakulam District `A' division cricket league tie on Monday.

The scores: Cordiant TCC `A' 316 for seven in 45 overs (Shindo 70, Abhijith Menon 48, Arun Paulose 41) bt Scorpions CC (Tripunithura) 91 in 21.4 overs (Vinil Wilson five for 20).

Women's kho-kho

At Kozhikode, the South-West Zone inter-university women's kho-kho championship will be held at the University Stadium, Tenhipalam, from December 22 to 26.

Around 70 universities, including holder and host Calicut, are expected to vie to honours in the tournament.

It will be followed by the all-India championship, to be held at the same venue, from December 27 to 31. Punjabi (Patiala), is the reigning champion.
