INDORE: The absence of Commonwealth gold winner Gagan Narang may steal the sheen of the men's 10m air rifle event at the 50th National shooting championship at the Reoti Ranges here. In Narang's absence, Navy's Sanjeev Rajput and junior world champion Navanath Faratade start as favourites. In the qualification series on Tuesday, Rajput scored 593 out of 600 and was four points ahead of Faratade. Rajput has been in good form, having won the 50m free rifle prone event last week. Only half of the total shooters entered in the air rifle event completed their qualification series while the rest will shoot on Wednesday morning. The top eight scorers will make it to the final scheduled for the evening.
Kuheli in lead
In the women's 50m sports rifle three-position event, seasoned Kuheli Gangulee took the lead with a score of 579. Tejaswini Sawant, who made it to the Asian Games final with a score of 578 before finishing seventh, was five points behind the leader at 574. Raj Kumari was third with 573 while the international shooters, Anjali Bhagwat, Avneet Kaur Sidhu and Suma Shirur, were languishing behind. A few shooters are yet to go through the qualification series. The scores: Men: 10m air rifle: 1. Sanjeev Rajput 593, 2. Navanath Faratade 589, 3. Raj Kumar 588. Women: 50m sports rifle: 1. Kuheli Gangulee 579, 2. Tejaswini Sawant 574, 3. Raj Kumari 573, 4. Anuja Jung 573, 5. Anjali Bhagwat 563, 6. Avneet Kaur Sidhu 562, 7. Suma Shirur 561.
