JAIPUR: Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has requested the Centre to provide exemption from income tax to the trust established in the State for effective implementation of the midday meal scheme. The trust especially promotes public-private partnership in the programme. In a letter addressed to Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, Ms. Raje pointed out that the Midday Meal Trust had submitted its papers to the National Committee on Social and Economic Welfare of the Revenue Ministry seeking exemption under Section 35 of the Income Tax Act. The committee is yet to take a decision on the request. Ms. Raje asked Mr. Chidambaram to intervene and convene a meeting of the committee as soon as possible. This would facilitate involvement of the private sector in building up a robust infrastructure for the scheme and speed up the State Government's efforts in the field, she added. The Chief Minister said the midday meal programme was being executed in over 74,000 Government schools, aided institutions, education guarantee centres and alternative and Navachar educational centres across the State.Ms. Raje pointed out that private trusts and voluntary organisations were helping in providing hot and nutritious food to 1.8-lakh children of 1,500 schools through mechanised kitchens established in several towns in the State.
