TECHNICAL ANALYSIS: Mumbai off-spinner Ramesh Powar came up with his best figures in Ranji Trophy. Photo: Mohammed Yousuf
HYDERABAD: Mumbai off-spinner Ramesh Powar's best Ranji figures and a century by D. Vinay Kumar for Hyderabad were the highlights of the third day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group `B' match at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) here on Tuesday. But, Mumbai was in trouble thanks to a lively spell by medium-pacer Alfred Absolom who struck three big blows to reduce the visitor to 62 for three at one stage. But, Vinayak Mane (33 batting, 138b, 2x4) and Rohit Sharma (33 batting, 70b, 5x4) prevented further damage. Hyderabad took a lead of 239 runs largely due to the enterprising 126-run stand between Vinay, who cracked his fourth Ranji century (103, 228b, 10x4, 1x6), and Ibrahim Khaleel (68, 3x4) for the sixth wicket.
Good spell
This despite Powar bowling his heart out (his spell today read 12.2-2-24-5) and his figures of seven for 89 eclipsed his previous best of six for 83 against Delhi last season. The off-spinner had the batsmen in knots and he got rid of the well-set Vinay with a beauty which spun in sharply and knocked back the stumps through the bat-pad gap. When Mumbai began the huge task of saving the match, it was rocked by Alfred Absolom. The medium-pacer trapped Sushant Marathe leg-before and then took a brilliant diving return catch to send back Bhavin Thakkar. Mumbai captain Amol Mazumdar was unhappy and fuming when he was adjudged leg-before to Absolom when he had played fully forward. Mumbai's hopes of saving the match now rest on the competent Mane and Rohit Sharma, who showed a lot of promise. The scores: Mumbai 1st innings: 115 Hyderabad 1st innings: T.
