VISAKHAPATNAM: Nine boxers from Haryana, the holder, moved into the semifinals of the seventh National senior women boxing championship at the Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium here on Tuesday. Runner-up Manipur moved into last the four-stage in five weight categories while third-placed Andhra Pradesh entered the semifinals in four categories. World championship gold medallist K.C. Lekha of Kerala (80kg), silver medallist N. Usha of Andhra Pradesh (57kg) and four bronze medallists: Aruna Mishra of Steel Plants Sports Board (66kg), Chhotolal Lora of Railway Sports Control Board (50kg) and Renu of Haryana (75kg) eased into the semifinals. Most of the bouts were one-sided though the day's schedule started with a keen fight between Jahana and Sonia J. of Assam. Jahana rallied well in the second round to take a small lead and the third round was a real slug fest with the two tied at 30-30. But Jahana punched with aggression and finished with a 38-33 lead. AP should have had another boxer in the semifinals but B.V. Padmavathi in her 75kg bout against Ch. Somlata of Delhi lost in spite of enjoying a 20-15 lead midway through the third and final round.
