NREGP irregularities: over 200 staff members removed

Anomalies noticed during social audit in seven districts

HYDERABAD: As many as 177 field assistants, 30 technical assistants and three programme officers were removed and two Mandal Parishad Development Officers suspended following detection of irregularities in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

Rural Development Minister D.Srinivas informed the Assembly on Tuesday that some irregularities were noticed by the Government during social audit conducted in seven districts.

Disciplinary action against errant officials was being initiated whenever such incidents were found.

Two MPDOs were repatriated to their parent department and the engineer-in-chief and commissioner, Panchayat Raj, were addressed respectively to initiate action against three assistant engineers and three MPDOs, he said.

According to the Minister, 47.68 lakh households were issued job cards and 222,160 works sanctioned at an estimated value of Rs.1,400 crores.

An amount of Rs.900.86 crores was released for the programme and 125,337 works were grounded in 13 districts creating 3.18 crore mandays of employment.

The total expenditure incurred so far was Rs.301.70 crores.

On the question of extending the scheme to drought-affected districts, Mr. Srinivas stated that drought relief programme was being implemented in the employment guarantee scheme mode in 42 mandals each in Kurnool and Prakasam districts and seven mandals of Guntur district, respectively.

The NREGP would be extended to another four to five districts next year and the Government would try to cover 22 districts.
