EERIE SILENCE: Policemen standing guard to a hostel block on SVU campus in Tirupati on Tuesday.
TIRUPATI: An uneasy calm descended on the 1,000-acre campus of S.V. University, which witnessed a stormy situation on Monday night leading to the indefinite closure of all its constituent colleges and hostels. The trouble sparked by the arrest of some students, who were allegedly watching a porn film in a college hostel, culminated in the gherao of the University's Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy for allegedly refusing to intervene and secure the release of the arrested students. The V-C after a late-night meeting with principals of all constituent colleges decided to close down the colleges and the attached hostels forthwith in view of the `volatile situation'. The authorities set 8 a.m. on Tuesday as deadline for students to vacate hostels. Many were seen trooping out, worry writ large on their faces. The University College of Engineering and its attached hostels have however been spared from the abrupt closure. Police pickets have been posted at all vulnerable places on the campus. The V-C in a press-release termed the decision to close down the trouble-torn colleges and the hostels as `painful but inevitable'. He also constituted a 6-member committee of senior academics to go into episode and submit a report on ways to avoid such incidents on the campus.
