CHENNAI : Forty-two writ petitions, filed by various political parties against notices seeking compensation for damage/loss caused to public properties, have been dismissed as infructuous by the Madras High Court. A Division Bench, comprising Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice S. Tamilvanan, passed the order after the court was informed that the Government had decided to withdraw the notices issued by the Commissioner of Revenue Administration claiming compensation of Rs. 46.87 lakh. The parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) had moved the court after they were served notices to appear for inquiry and claiming compensation for the damage or loss caused to the public property. . While some petitions challenged the notices, others challenged the specific provisions of the Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act/Rules 1994. The PMK was facing 28 cases, involving a compensation claim of Rs. 39.36 lakh. While the DMK faced seven cases, involving Rs. 52,264, the MDMK, the Hindu Munnani, the Ambedkar People Liberation Movement and VOICE (Consumer Care Council) faced one case each. When the batch of petitions came up for hearing , Additional Advocate-General III placed letter dated December 13, and said the decision had been informed to all political parties and organisations concerned.
