Kite festival to start on December 27

Staff Correspondent

The highlight of the event will be a `Manja' kite fight where fliers will try to cut the thread of other kites

BIDAR: A kite festival and kite flying competition will be held as part of Bidar Utsav in Bidar for three days from December 27.

Kite enthusiasts from Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh are expected to participate in the event. The festival will have a demonstration of various types of kites and stalls to sell kites and kite materials. People will get an opportunity to interact with professional kite makers and fliers. The competitive flying section will have separate sections for youngsters and adults.

The highlight of the event will be a "Manja" kite fight. In this, fliers will try to cut down the thread of other kites. Prizes will be given to those who manage to cut maximum number of threads and those who retain their threads intact till the end.

For this people will have to prepare "Manja", special glue smeared on the thread. This should be made on the spot, using materials recommended by experts. Use of harmful chemicals and wire to prepare Manja are prohibited. Prizes will be awarded to the biggest kite and the best-flown kite.

Rajshekar Koujalagi, organiser, told presspersons here on Tuesday that, Kite flying was not new to the district as it was an ancient tradition. It was a hobby and a competitive sport among the people and kings who ruled the region.

Emblem

A painting of Raja Sawai Mansingh and his queen flying kites from their rooftop has been selected as the emblem of the event. We plan to make it an annual event, Dr. Koujalagi said.

Dr. Ishwar Koujalagi trust is sponsoring the event. For further details, contact Ravi Mulge (94481-10881) or Maqsood Chanda (94482-58625).
