BELLARY: Cane growers in Hospet and surrounding areas ended their 15-day dharna on Tuesday following an agreement that the ISR sugar factory in Hospet would procure cane at Rs. 1,140 per tonne. The cane growers had demanded a price of Rs. 1,300 per tonne in view of the high sugar recovery rate.
Negotiations held
During negotiations held earlier, they had asked the factory to pay at least Rs. 1,165 per tonne. The cane growers had held a bandh in Hospet on December 12 to press for their demand to be met. Following the bandh, Home Minister M.P. Prakash had supervised negotiations between farmer leaders and the factory management and had settled the matter. Treasurer of the Hospet Cane Growers' Association Gosala Bharmappa told The Hindu Mr. Prakash had also assured that he would arrange to give the farmers a fifty per cent refund to the tune of Rs. 35 per tonne of the purchase tax, after discussing the issue with the Government.
