Chennai's answer to Tiruvaiyaru

Music festival to be inaugurated at Kamarajar Arangam on Friday

CHENNAI : A unique festival will be held this month in Chennai to replicate the Tiruvaiyaru aradhana with audience participation.

Titled `Chennaiyil Tiruvaiyaru', the festival to be inaugurated at Kamarajar Arangam on Friday would have pancharatna kritis rendered, as is done traditionally at the Thyagaraja Aradhana.

Musicians and music enthusiasts will join to sing the immortal kritis.

Hosted jointly by the Lakshman Sruthi Musicals, Kalalaya USA and Nataka Academy, the five-day festival would present 25 music concerts with artistes performing from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Addressing mediapersons on Tuesday, Lakshman of Lakshman Sruthi troupe said the idea of `Chennaiyil Tiruvaiyaru' was conceived at a group discussion about hosting a music festival that would stand apart from the rest in the season. About 300 Carnatic singers and an audience of about 2,000 people would sing the kritis.

Besides established musicians, five upcoming artisteshave been encouraged to perform in the festival, he said.

Raman of Lakshman Sruthi troupe said music enthusiasts who wished to participate in the inaugural function could register earlier.

Saxophone maestro Kadri Gopalnath, veena artiste Revathi Krishna and Carnatic singer Mahathi who would be performing in the festival also spoke.

Kala Iyer of Kalalaya and Marimuthu of Nataka Academy also participated.

Tickets will be available at Lakshman Sruthi Musicals showroom at Ashok Nagar, branches of Naidu Hall and Kamarajar Hal.
