NIT-T to augment its infrastructure

Special Correspondent

Anticipates increase in student strength

TIRUCHI: The National Institute Technology, Tiruchi (NIT-T) has planned to improve its infrastructure substantially anticipating an increase in the students' strength in the wake of the Central Government's decision to implement 27 per cent reservation to other backward classes (OBCs) in the higher educational institutions with effect from the ensuing academic year.

Owing to the OBC quota, the NIT-T expects the students' strength to rise to 6,000 by 2010 from the present 3,600. The infrastructure in terms of classrooms to accommodate more students, additional laboratories and laboratory equipment, hostels, hospital, buildings, quarters and other student amenities have to be created in the next couple of years, the Director of the NIT-T, M. Chidambaram told presspersons here on Tuesday.

Faculty and the support staff strength too have to be increased considerably. The NIT-T is expected to get adequate fund allocation from the Ministry of Human Resource Development for undertaking these activities, he said.

Steps are being taken to develop the NIT-T departments as autonomous and flexible centres of excellence to meet the sweeping changes in the open economy and a rapidly changing technical education scene globally.

Architecture courses

Replying to a question, Dr. Chidambaram said that it has been proposed to introduce two master degree courses in the Department of Architecture from the next academic year — Master of Town Planning and Master of Architecture. The Indian Council of Architecture has been approached for getting the necessary permission for the same. Another new course in the pipeline is the M.Sc. in Applied Maths, in order to enable B.Sc graduates to enter the portals of the NIT-T. NIT-T in imparting specialised coaching to students of Plus-Two of various schools in Tiruchi to train them in facing the AIEEE exams to enter the NITs evoked a good response.

The top-ranking students of the NIT-T conducted the programme. The same batch of students will be conducting a similar daylong programme at Madurai shortly. It has been proposed to conduct more programmes in the southern districts in a phased manner, he added.

Convocation

The second annual convocation of the NIT-T has been scheduled for December 23, when a total of 938 candidates will get their degrees. The Vice-Chairman of Sanmar Group, N. Kumar, will deliver the convocation address and the Chairman, Board of Governors, NIT-T, R. Seshasayee, will preside over the function, he said.
