Spotlight on right to housing

NEW DELHI: A two-day national convention on "Right to Housing and Life with Dignity" organised by Delhi Shramik Sangathan ended here on Tuesday.

Releasing its manifesto at the concluding session, the Sangathan rejected the concept of multi-storey buildings to rehabilitate slum dwellers. It was an attempt to benefit the builders, it said.

Among other things, the manifesto demanded that the principle of "in situ" rehabilitation and slum development be adhered to and affordable housing provided to slum-dwellers. The meeting also adopted a resolution expressing solidarity with the farmers of Singur who are protesting against acquisition of their land by the Government for the Tata motor plant.

A large number of representatives of different organisations from different States took part in the convention.

`Cheats' held

NEW DELHI: Five persons allegedly involved in over 40 cases of cheating have been arrested at Mehrauli in South Delhi. All the accused belong to Mewat in Haryana. Acting on a tip-off, the police laid a trap near a park at Lado Sarai on Monday. The accused were arrested when they gathered there to meet one of their prospective victims. Two fake gold bricks and two motorcycles were seized from them, the police said.

During interrogation, the accused purportedly confessed to having sold fake gold bricks to many people in the past three years. They were also active in cities like Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai.

Burglary bid foiled

NEW DELHI: With the arrest of four persons, the North-West Delhi police claim to have foiled an armed burglary attempt at a liquor shop on Burari Road. According to the police, the four were arrested when they were allegedly hatching a plan to commit burglary at a liquor shop sitting inside a vehicle. Two of their accomplices managed to flee. One case of vehicle theft has been worked out with their arrest, the police said.

Murder case solved

NEW DELHI: The South Delhi police on Tuesday claimed to have solved a 10-month-old murder case with the arrest of a resident of Ferozabad in UP. The mutilated body of Nirdosh Kumar was recovered from Jaitpur Extension in Madanpur Khandar in February. According to the police, Nirdosh allegedly had illicit relations with the sisters of the accused.

DIAL offer

NEW DELHI: In an attempt to woo the Airports Authority of India employees at Delhi airport, the Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL) on Tuesday approved the proposal to absorb all the employees.

Under the "Operation, Management and Development Agreement" (OMDA) signed between AAI and DIAL, DIAL was only committed to absorbing a minimum of 60 per cent of the AAI employees during the Operation Support Period. However, DIAL has decided to reach out to all the employees.
