`BMP should check stray dog menace'

Staff Reporter

  • Dog bites are responsible for over 90 per cent of rabies deaths
  • Majority of the victims are ignorant people and children from slums and poor localities

Bangalore: "It is ... agonising to know how human beings are left with no option, but to die in a miserable way when they become victims of stray dog bites... It is rather sad that such a cause, which is responsible for the death of human beings in great numbers, is not given due attention from the authorities concerned. The BMP should perform its obligatory duty and enable people to move freely without fear of being bitten by stray dogs." These are some of the observations made by former Lokayukta, N. Venkatachala. His report, submitted to the Government two years ago, deals with the stray dog menace, plight of the bite victims, and shortcomings in the plan in tackling the menace.
