Thiruvananthapuram: Tackling emergency situations like a blaze on the airport premises or an air crash is a matter where the swiftness and alertness of the Airport Fires Service (AFS) personnel become crucial. The personnel of the AFS demonstrated how equipped and alert they were in handling such situations, at the international airport here on Tuesday. The occasion was the presentation of the trophy for the Best Fire Station among the international airports in the country for 2005. The fire station at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport bagged the award. The show, on the premises of the airport fire station located inside the airport, commenced with an `unconscious' person being rescued from the second floor of the station building using the `chair knot' method. After this, a man supposed to have sustained multiple fractures in an accident, was `rescued' from the same floor. The AFS personnel demonstrated the use of power saw and how they would gain entry into an aircraft that was locked. This was followed by demonstration of the rescue act. Two personnel, wearing fire-resistant proximity suits and masks, demonstrated `rescue from fire.' The demonstration came to an end with the `monitor throw' by three crash fire-tenders. Coloured water, representing the tri-colour, was jetted from devices called monitors. The crash fire-tenders use aqua film forming foam to extinguish fire from oil.
