ERODE: " The highways department has proposed to lay a ring road in Erode to remove traffic congestion. A private consultant has already been appointed which will conduct a survey in the proposed route and submit a report to the state government. Later land acquiring will begin,'' said Highways and Ports Minister M.P. Saminathan recently after conducting a review meeting of the highways department on the formation of roads and construction of bridges in the district. Mr Saminathan said for acquisition of land the state government had sanctioned Rs. 30 crore and for laying the ring road Rs. 40 crore would be obtained from the Union Government.
Overbridges
He also said to ease traffic congestion in Erode town, it was proposed to construct overbridges at Government Headquarters Hospital junction and Paneerselvam Park junction. The Minister said if possible a bridge would be built connecting the Paneerselvam Park and Government Hospital junctions. He also said a bridge would be built at Marapalam area across the Perumapallam odai at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh. The present bridge would be demolished. On road developments, he said in Erode district 1,161-km roads would be laid during this financial year at a cost of Rs. 146 crore. In addition, 21 bridges would also be built at a cost of Rs. 16 crore. He said Rs. 8 crore had been sanctioned for widening the Pasur-Chozhasiramani electricity barrage road. This would connect Erode and Namakkal districts.
