Pursue 10-point action plan, Kalam tells Kerala

Staff Reporter

THRISSUR: President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on Wednesday said that development concerns should take precedence over politics.

Addressing the valedictory function of programmes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of Kerala, the President said that everyone should know that ``the State is bigger than political parties.'' He called upon the Government to pursue earnestly the 10-point action plan he had proposed for the State's development.

``Kerala benefits by unity of minds, support of non-resident Keralites [who contribute about Rs.20,000 crore to the State every year], rich water resources and biodiversity. What more do you need to develop and prosper?''

He said the entire State should be connected by a waterway network.

``Electronic connectivity should complement physical connectivity. The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre can help the State in providing telemedicine and tele-education facilities to different parts of the State, including rural areas. All houses in the State should get clean water and have sanitation facilities,'' he said. He called for efforts to improve literacy in tribal settlements, promote agro-processing and fish processing and marketing, and make the State a hub of IT and IT-enabled services.
