Pace of work on Shiraadi Ghat road affected

Staff Correspondent

BEYOND REPAIR: A view of the National Highway 48 near Shiraadi Ghat.

HASSAN: When Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Muniyappa released Rs. 30 crore for the repair of the 46-km stretch Shiraadi Ghat Road that is full of potholes, there was a sigh of relief. But this was short-lived.

The repair work included the 38-km stretch from Shiraadi Ghat to Anemahal in Hassan district and the eight-kilometre stretch from Anemahal (towards Mangalore) in Dakshina Kannada district. A cement road would be laid at deep curves in the ghat. A sum of Rs. 7 crore has been spent to repair an 11-km stretch of road.

According to Assistant Executive Engineer Somasekhar of the National Highways Division, work has slowed down as contractors are not willing to implement it as the departmental schedule rate is too low.

There is no provision even to give five per cent more than the departmental schedule rate. A video recording of the damaged road would be made and the compact disc would be sent to the Union Government with a request to permit to give five per cent more than the departmental schedule rate to the contractors and stone crushers, he said.
