SAME OLD PROBLEM: The University of Madras is again without a full-time Registrar. Photo: K. Pichumani
According to university officials, the Government turned down the Syndicate's request to extend her tenure. It is also said that some Syndicate members were not in favour of the extension. Enquiries with the Vice-Chancellor's office revealed that M. Ranganathan, Head of the University's Commerce Department had been asked to officiate. Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran said an official decision on the appointment of a full-time Registrar would be taken soon.
Five occasions
In the past decade, there were at least five occasions when the University went without a full-time Registrar with only a professor or non-teaching staff acting as Registrar-in-charge. Ms. Fernandes, who was working in a college in Tiruchi, was appointed for a one-year term that ended in late September. She was asked to continue pending a decision from the Government.
Request turned down
But after the Syndicate's request was turned down, she demitted office. Enquiries indicate that an IAS office could be appointed for the crucial post.
