Match ends in a tame draw

NEW DELHI: Bad light, three stoppages, meaningless cricket mostly and some bad conduct by the players summed up the final day's play between Delhi and Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy Super League match at the Ferozeshah Kotla here on Wednesday.

Major contributors

Resuming at 32 for one, Karnataka compiled 242 for six and play was called off once it declared the innings. The match ended in a draw with Karnataka taking two points to take its tally to ten from four matches while Delhi, which now plays three away fixtures, stayed at ten.

For the record, Robin Uthappa hit 63 off 121 balls with seven fours, Thilak Naidu made 67 off 122 balls with 11 fours and Yere Goud remained unbeaten on 56 off 149 balls with five fours and a six.

The day's play started an hour late and the lack of competitive flavour only added to the frustration of the Delhi players. Unable to win decisions from aggressive appeals, one of them, leg-spinner Chetnya Nanda attracted a penalty of 50 per cent of his match fee following a complaint by umpire P.S. Godbole. "Bad behaviour" confirmed Match Referee Divakar Vasu even as the player apologised for his misdeed on the field.

Sanghvi retained

Off the field, there was an unexpected development when left-arm spinner Rahul Sanghvi was retained in the team for the next two matches against Saurashtra and Andhra. The selectors had proclaimed that Sanghvi was being given the option to "opt out." He did not, and this time they had no option but to retain him. The reason handed officially was that since the team had been announced for the next matches too, the selectors did not want to create further unpleasantness in the dressing room.

Karnataka next meets Andhra at Anantpur while Delhi plays Saurashtra at Rajkot from December 25.
