KARAIKAL: Farmers should avoid using insecticides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers for their agricultural crops and switch over to organic farming methods, said Pradip Mehra, Chief Secretary to Puducherry Government, here on Wednesday. Inaugurating a seminar on "Organic rice production" at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research Institute here, Mr. Mehra said that use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers on agricultural crops would affect the soil, yield and the livestock. He appealed to the college faculty to teach the farming community on the ill effects of using chemical fertilizers on agricultural crops and to follow the latest technology and transfer of technology in agriculture, "as we are into second phase of green revolution." L. Nadarajan, Dean, Sudhir Kumar, Collector, faculty members from Gandhigram Rural University and Regional Centre for Organic Farming, Bangalore, spoke.
